20 is worth celebrating

In 2024, I will be celebrating 20 years with Disorder2Order. It's a milestone worth memorializing. I love to reflect on lessons learned and accomplishments. When I turned 50, and my business turned 15, I glanced back and memorialized those life milestones.

Besides being a mother, this is the longest job I have ever had.

In 2003, I realized how much I enjoyed helping people simplify and get organized. The internet was still on dial-up, and Google was beginning to dominate the web. I found NAPO (National Association of Productivity & Organizing Professionals) and immediately joined. It was the perfect side hustle for me as my babies grew.

Initially, I loved working with clients in their family spaces: playrooms, kids' closets, and craft spaces were my specialty. I taught classes and helped moms manage their ever-changing schedules. When my kids started school, my business expanded into the corporate sector. I helped small companies in process improvement and standardization, and as our digital world continued to grow, so did my expertise in paper elimination and leveraging technology.

I continued to advance my expertise by becoming a Certified Professional Organizer and investing in my business through annual training and industry educational programs.

"This work is essential, and I am honored to be alongside my clients on their organizing journey."

Teaching my clients to navigate on their own is where the magic happens. When making a tough decision, my clients will hear my voice, reminding them what they have learned and helping them make decisions.

A few things I've said that are worth repeating:

  1. Even the smallest of steps toward a goal are still steps forward. Traction comes with consistency.

  2. Actions speak louder than words when it comes to getting things done. We can talk about it all day long. You will only change once you start taking action and doing something about it.

  3. If we keep everything, then nothing is truly special. Honor your possessions by taking care of them.

  4. Everything needs to have a home. A home is where something belongs when it's not in use.

  5. Support can often help us overcome a hurdle. Support can come from setting reminders, scheduling time, using alarms, engaging a partner, or hiring an expert.

  6. Technology should be a help, not a hindrance.

  7. When something feels too big to complete, break it down into manageable steps. It is a solid approach to getting things done.

  8. Say no to things that don't align with your goals and priorities.

  9. When you need more storage, look for vertical space. You can find options when you look up.

  10. We have to maintain almost everything in our lives, including our spaces. Maintenance is part of the process.

  11. Done is better than perfect. Spending time seeking only perfection will always stop you from getting things done.

I have taught my clients how to optimize space and create systems to support their lifestyles. I have helped them streamline their workflow and eliminate time wasters. I have helped my clients face the psychological and emotional connection that our possessions carry. I love to inspire clients to seek motivation to get things done.
